Special Education
Currently, I am taking Special Education part 1 from Queens University. I thought I would use this page as a place for me to document my growth in exceptional learning.
A component of this course requires that I create a portfolio. I have chosen to focus a portion of my portfolio on accommodations, modifications, and alternative programming. I want to make my focus more specific: exceptionalities and first nations students.
Originally when I began this course, I choose first nations to focus on first nations special education. However, as I went about this course, I realized that learning the material and data collection for special education in Ontario was far more important. As such, my portfolio reflects my growth in overall special education knowledge!

Website Review
The name of the website I choose to review is http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/specialed/landbdif/.
What is the purpose of the web page?
The page is focused on “teaching students with learning and behavioural differences.” The web page focuses on professional training and resources for educators. The main purpose of the web page is to help provide strategies and resources to help educators meet the needs of exceptional students with behavioural differences.
Who is the author/organization creator of this site?
The website was created by the B.C. ministry of education- special education division. The web page is an additional resource which supports “Special Education: A Manual of Policies, Procedures and Guidelines and Awareness of Chronic Health Conditions: What the Teacher Needs” (B.C. Ministry of Education, 1995.)
How complete and accurate is the information provided?
After looking at a number of webpages focused on behavioural exceptionalities, I choose this site for these reasons: the website has a wide range of resources, both theory and class resources, the website contains Canada content, and the webpage was produced by a reputable source (B.C. government.) The information on the webpage is both complete and accurate. In fact, I would highly recommend this website to any teacher who wants to learn more about behavioural exceptionalities. The webpage contains, case studies, theory, example IEPs, accommodations/modifications to curriculum standards, and actual teaching resources.
How comprehensive is this site?
The webpage is extremely comprehensive and easy to navigate. One thing that I really liked about it is that all the information and resources are neatly organized into small chunks. Also the viewer can move back and forth, depending on their own teaching needs. I also liked the holistic nature of the webpage; the website includes links and resources for subject specific content for the exceptional student with behavioural differences. For example, there are links to resources on math, writing, reading strategies for behaviourally exceptional students.
Who would benefit from using this site?
I think that this webpage can be used for all members of the in-school team. However, I think it is most relevant for the class teacher. Many of the case studies focused on whole-class behavioural issues. Also many of the resources focus on helping the in-class teacher meet the needs of the student. Nevertheless, I feel this could be applied to all educators within the team.
Does the site show any particular bias?
In my opinion, the only bias that is seen is towards the student’s well-being and welfare and so it should be!
Is the site advertising/promoting a product?
No! I choose a Provincial website because I am inexperienced in special education and I felt comfortable with adhering to government sponsored standards, theory, and resources.
