The Pre-referral process

Think About It
Case 15 in Teaching Exceptional Children and Adolescents: A Canadian Casebook. Summary using the 6 stage method: I remember having a student in one of my previous teaching jobs who was very similar to Len. He was disorganized, often late, and never handed anything in. The process of pre-referral was non-existent at that school: it was up to the individual teacher how best to work with the student. I did similar things that Vicki Kruger did but only within my classroom\: Helped maintain his locker, created a whole class calendar, worked with decoding skills, adapted assignment choices to help him. . Knowing what I know now, I would have done much more: some things that were lacking, proper diagnoses, in-school team strategies, uniform assessment checklists amongst teachers, visual calendar, special education coordination. |
